Based in the heart of South Yorkshire, we've been doing this for over 20 years, and we're proud to work with the best bed and mattress brands in the UK.
It's our mission to help each and every one of our customers find the perfect mattress for them and to get the sleep they deserve.
The story begins with the meeting of Mattress Online co-founders Steve Adams and Steve Kelly in 2003.
It was Steve Kelly who first suggested the idea of selling mattresses and beds online. At the time, there were almost no other online mattress or bed suppliers. But after seeing how large companies like Argos managed to sell mattresses remotely through its catalogue and collection system, the idea of Mattress Online was formed.
Both Steves had the bright idea of combining Steve Adams’s e-commerce and logistics experience with Steve Kelly’s knowledge of the beds industry to launch the fledgling Mattress Online website.
When it came to actually building the website and creating the order delivery systems, that’s when Steve A got in touch with his brother, Martin, who promptly joined the project - and he’s stuck around!
September 2003 - The idea of Mattress Online is born. Steve Adams - already schooled in the arts of e-commerce - and Steve Kelly - an expert in beds and mattresses - have the idea to combine their experience and create an online mattress company with free next-day delivery.
December 2003 - Mattress Online’s first website is launched with the help of Martin Adams, Steve’s brother. The website has a total of 5 products, including one own-brand - Bodyshape - which we still stock to this day!
On the 16th of December 2003, the website sells its first mattress.
May 2004 - Steve Adams and Steve Kelly make Mattress Online their full-time job. It is at this time that they decide to turn Mattress Online into a limited company.
Late 2004 - The first big brand is welcomed to the Mattress Online website - Silentnight! We are proud to have maintained a strong relationship with Silentnight ever since, and continue to support well-known brands to this day.
2005 - A pivotal moment in Mattress Online’s history sees the business move from its base in South Yorkshire to its new warehouses in Rotherham. During this transition period, mattress storage space is at such short supply that Steve and Steve even have to store stock in their own homes! As well as the warehousing in Rotherham, the pair also buy their first brick-and-mortar store, The Bed Shop, and hire a 7-person team to run both locations. The business has stayed in Rotherham ever since!
2006 - The company makes its first hire exclusively for Mattress Online - a Customer Service operator. Warehouse and Dispatch teams soon follow. During this time, two more big brands also join the fold - Sealy and Rest Assured!
2008 - Up until this point, Steve and Martin Adams had been running the website all by themselves. However, as Mattress Online continues to grow, it becomes necessary to hire the company’s first Digital Team employee.
2010 - The second version of the website is launched.
2011 - Another huge year for Mattress Online.
Trustpilot is an independent, third-party review platform that allows our customers to rate the service they received from Mattress Online.
On top of all of that, Mattress Online records an incredibly successful business year!
2012 - Steve and Steve open a new centre of operations at the Rotherham warehouse, internally known as Mattress Online HQ.
2013 - Mattress Online welcomes Sleepeezee to the website!
2014 - Mattress Online wins its first National Bed Federation (NBF) award - Highly Commended Bed E-Tailer! A second reviews platform, Reevoo (now Feefo), was launched on the website.
Like Trustpilot, Feefo is an independent review platform where Mattress Online customers can exclusively review products purchased from our website.
2015 - As order numbers begin to grow, the business partners with Panther Logistics (now AIT Home Delivery) to help deliver our mattresses due to the growth in orders across England, Wales and Scotland.
With over 20 years of experience in the delivery and haulage industry, Panther (AIT Home Delivery) aligns with Mattress Online's core values and provides excellent service to all of our customers further afield.
We also launched our mobile-friendly version of the website to help our customers browse and purchase on their smartphones.
2016 - Mattress Online launches its mattress recycling service, which is still going strong today! When you order a mattress from us, you have the option to recycle your old mattress with us for only £35.
Both Steves also acquire more warehousing space, totalling 115,000 sq ft. Growth continues and the company launches its next own brand, Luna.
2019 - Co-founder Steve Kelly makes the decision to retire from the business.
Martin Eastwood joins the Mattress Online family as the new Chief Operations Officer (COO). This is a great moment for the business! Martin brings with him 11 years of experience at the Silentnight Group. While at Silentnight, Martin worked closely with the Mattress Online teams and mutual respect was born. He still maintains a strong relationship with Silentnight to this day!
Mattress Online wins the NBF’s Online Bed Retailer award!
2020 - Mattress Online has the honour of partnering with The Sleep Charity - an organisation that specialises in helping families who are struggling with sleep issues. We help to spread the message of sleep importance while contributing funds, products and warehousing space so that The Sleep Charity can continue to grow their offering outside of Yorkshire.
Mattress Online also wins the NBF’s Online Bed Retailer award for the second year in a row!
2021 - Yet another busy year for Mattress Online! Steve Adams is introduced to Zarach, a Leeds based charity that is committed to ending bed poverty. It is a cause that resonates strongly with the Mattress Online team and Steve forges a strong partnership with Zarach. Mattress Online donates funds to Zarach and partakes in many charity events throughout the year to raise money for the organisation. Our delivery team even helps to deliver Christmas hampers to families supported by the charity.
The business adds another premium brand to the website, Harrison Spinks, and wins ‘Large Business of the Year' at the Sheffield Business Awards. To top off another fantastic year, Mattress Online hits 50,000 Trustpilot reviews and also wins the NBF’s Online Bed Retailer for the third year in a row!
2022 - Yet another year of achievements and an important time for Mattress Online! After years of hard work and effort, the business launches its new bespoke website in May. We also won the NBF’s Online Bed Retailer for the fourth time.
Mattress Online is happy to welcome its second store to the Mattress Online family, the Skipton Bed & Sofa Centre! At the time of acquisition, this store was 51 years old and we retained the entire Skipton Bed & Sofa Centre team.
We also opened the Mattress Online Outlet Store in Sheffield as well!
The company also launches its Comfort Trial - a site-wide returns policy - and announces a new expert partnership, with the Sleep Geek!
Two more big-name brands are added to the website, Hypnos and TEMPUR, while the company boasts even more awards - the Scale Up e-commerce Award and Yorkshire Post Business Medium-sized Business of the Year award!
2023 - Mattress Online hits 60,000 Trustpilot reviews and we partner with a local cancer charity, Cavendish Cancer Care! We donate funds to the charity, promote their expertise in the press and receive staff wellbeing training from the amazing Cavendish team.
We also celebrate Mattress Online's 20th birthday!
2024 - Our expansion across Yorkshire welcomes the fourth Mattress Online shop - the Mattress Online Doncaster Store! This latest addition brings a fresh new look to mattress and bed shopping with its unique and sleek design.
Mattress Online begins to deliver to Northern Ireland.
We’re thrilled to share that Mattress Online has also been named one of the winners of the annual SME Business Elite Awards for Best Online Mattress & Bed Retailer 2024! This award celebrates our skill, expertise, and dedication as a standout small to medium-sized enterprise in the UK.
