Spring has finally sprung! And after months of getting cosy and nesting in your room, it’s a great time to throw open the windows, air it all out and get a good Spring clean going!

Winter can be a tough time to get the motivation to clean. You’d much rather stay snuggled up in bed than start stripping off the covers, but the excuses are over! You need some fresh sheets to go with this fresh weather.

But to get a really deep clean, there’s one aspect of the bedroom that is often overlooked: your mattress.

Over the years mattresses can accrue a lot of dirt and grime. In fact, after 7 years, your mattress will absorb an average two full bath-tubs of bodily fluids and around three kilograms of dead skin!

Feel like cleaning yet? Great!

There are mechanical based options such as steam-cleaning or hot water extraction. However, these can be very expensive and take a lot of time. Follow our handy infographic below for a great smelling mattress that’s as good as new. And using nothing other than regular products you would find around your house!

How to clean your mattress It’s not a glamorous job but sadly, somebody has to do it. Every item in your house sometimes needs a little spruce and your mattress is no exception! It can seem like a daunting task when you’re faced with a King-sized beast - or bigger! Fear not - just follow our quick and easy guide and your mattress will soon be smelling fresher than a roomful of lemons! 1. Wash The first step is to strip the bed entirely and wash your bedding. Not just the sheets and pillowcases - remove any mattress toppers, protectors and the pillows and duvet too. After all - there’s no point pairing a freshly cleaned mattress with fusty bedding! 2. Vacuum Using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner (normally square and funnel-shaped), hoover the entire surface of your mattress to pick up any trapped dust, dirt or dead skin. Make at least one or two passes over every inch, as well as a quick run over the sides too. 3. Deodorise The best way to absorb excess moisture and restore freshness to your mattress cover is to use bicarbonate of soda. Sprinkle it evenly over the mattress using a sieve and pop in a handful of crushed lavender for extra sleep-inducing scent! Rub it in lightly and then leave for half an hour. 4. Vacuum again Make sure you get up every last bit of powder, or your bed will be gritty and not much fun to sleep on! Once the hoover has done its work you will probably notice an instant difference in smell and your mattress should be looking a whole lot fresher. 5. Spot Clean The Sleep Council recommend using a mild detergent mixed with water. Dab lightly at any stains and rub in a circular motion with a damp towel. Make sure you don’t saturate the mattress. Leave to air dry or use a hairdryer on a low heat setting to speed up the process. 6. Repeat Before wrapping your shiny like-new mattress up in some fresh sheets, it’s a good idea to take the opportunity to flip your mattress (if double-sided) and repeat the process on the bottom. Flipping ensures you even out the wear across the mattress and maximise its longevity. 7. Air If possible, open a window and let your mattress air out a little before making the bed again. Your mattress and bedroom will feel a great deal fresher and you can fall into it tonight feeling accomplished and very brawny from shifting a mattress about. Happy snoozing!
